Excellent Gusto interviews Sergio Pérez, aka ‘Checo’ Pérez, the Mexican Formula One driver for Sahara Force India.

Hi, Sergio! Car racing is a true passion for you. How did it start?
I was 6 years old when my father gave me a go-kart. I had a lot of talent, but initially I preferred to play football and my dream was to become a professional football player. As I got older, I realised that I was better at driving cars than kicking a ball!

What was the most significant moment in your career?
Meeting Carlos Slim. He gave me the ability to jump from karts to Formula cars when I was 13 and that was a really significant moment for me.

What do you feel during a race?
You feel the excitement and the adrenaline running through your body. It’s very intense and you have to concentrate very hard, but it’s something that’s a lot of fun too!

What is your greatest strength?
I have the ability to control my emotions. I have good mental strength.

What are your limitations?
There are no limits! In sports, you should never give up.

What are your future goals?
I am very pleased with the results so far. My goal is that the team has its best season every year.

Who do you thank most in supporting your career?
My family and Carlos Slim.

Sergio, how do you describe the F1 world?
Competitive. Professional. Stressful. Fun.

The lifestyle of a F1 driver is…
Very disciplined, hard work, commitment to training and dedication. Even nutrition is very important. The goal is to do the best you can.

Is it easy for you to keep to the rules? And what is your diet like?
You have to be strict, but it’s not difficult. It’s the commitment of a good athlete. My physiotherapist, Xavi, explains that nutrition is important and his instructions are easy to follow. The hotels where we stay, as well as on the track, have excellent chefs who take care of me.

Apart from the diet, what foods are you passionate about?
I obviously love Mexican food, especially spicy and chilli flavours. I also like Japanese food such as sushi.

What advice can you give to a young person who wants to become a Formula 1 driver?
Never give up! Strive to be the best and even if you don’t make it all the way, have fun and enjoy the journey!

Your secret dream?
My dream is simply to become Formula One World Champion.

Sergio, would you like to create “The Sergio Pérez Recipe” together with the Excellent Gusto Team? A recipe expressing your food passions.
